September 11-12, 2019: Worked as Emory Libraries Scholarly Communications Associate to co-organize a two-day workshop to introduce humanities graduate students to open access. Also co-authored and secured a Libraries Innovation Grant to support the workshop.
While open access continues to gain traction in the social and natural sciences, the dissemination and application of open access tools, methods, and research in the humanities has been slow to take root. The Open Humanities Graduate Student Workshop will bring together graduate students from programs across Atlanta to learn about open publishing, research, pedagogy, tools, and careers within and beyond the tenure track from panels of experts from Emory, University of Georgia, and Kennesaw State University.
The workshop will feature a keynote from Dean Michael Elliott, panel presentations featuring publishing and humanities experts from across Atlanta, and a skill-building Do-a-Thon session where participants will learn and apply basic HTML/CSS to develop an online professional or teaching presence.
In the panel sessions, participants will learn more about:
- Open Tools and Resources: Provides a broad overview of open tools graduate students might use for humanistic research, scholarship, teaching, or professional development. Panelists will serve as facilitators, and participants will have the chance to learn about the tools they have used or would like to use in their open humanities work.
- Open Humanities in the Academy: Explores how open resources can be used in more traditional tenure-track careers. Panelists will discuss open access in the classroom, research, collaboration, and the tenure-track process. Panelists will share their career narratives as they relate to open resources and then engage in a thirty-minute Q&A session with the audience.
- Open Humanities Careers Beyond Tenure Track: Features speakers who work in careers beyond the tenure track. Panelists will discuss the ways they use open access tools in their careers and the ways graduate students may develop open competencies in preparation for future careers outside the traditional tenure-track position. Panelists will share their career narratives as they relate to open and then engage in a thirty-minute Q&A session with the audience.
- Open Publishing: Explores the publication of open scholarship, including theses, dissertations, monographs, and journal articles. Panelists will explore the pros and cons of open publishing and engage in a thirty-minute Q&A session with the audience.
